The White House next resident is……….

February 12, 2008 · 12 Comments

OMG, I’m so fascinated by the political happenings in the United States right now.  Barrack Obama! Wow! It’s a groundswell!

In 2006 while Jamaica was on the cusp of creating history, I maintained in discussions that for me the issue is definitely bigger than a woman being Prime Minister of Jamaica for the first time.  I wanted the best person to win so therefore I wouldn’t give her my vote simply because I was also a female.

I’m not a citizen of the United States of course, but I do think the sentiment should remain the same.  The issue should definitely be more than whether a black man or a woman will be in the White House.  But who can help being fascinated by the possibilities?

    agreed!

I hope Obama wins the democratic nomination since it appears he has something extra that the others dont have but I’m still wary

We are in the midst of historical times…a black man, a woman, a spouse of a previous president. I just want the candidate that will get the job done and I’m really torn between Obama and Clinton.

I’m all for Obama. And I agree, the possibilities are fascinating.

I really have no intention of pouring “cold” water on the high expectations of many. However, my question to all those living outside the US, is simple.
-do you think that the US society is ready for an African American to be the President of that country?
-do you think that the voters will accept a female as President?

With the race relations in the US being so divisive and females being stopped with the proverbial “glass ceiling”, can the voters see past those two idioms . The so called “black” or “latino” votes are they going to Obama, and on the reverse side, is the “female” votes going to Hillary. If the “black” votes go to Obama, will they expect him to bring them up from the oppresive state that they find themselves or are they going to see it for what it is ….. politics make strange bedfellows.
    Cheers

Another 8 years of Clintonism and you might as well just elect the Bush and Clintons as the next royal fly

I hate that I support him because he’s black. Thank God I’m not American so I don’t have to feel guilty about my vote. I think ultimately the issues they face are so far over many of our heads that we avoid considering the issues and settling with the likeablility factor.

I’ve followed this election campaign deeply, and despite that, I’d be hard-pressed to go anti-Obama even if he did something really stupid. I just think it’s such a monumental achievement for a black man to do what he’s doing.

It’s great for Hillary too, as a woman. But she also has the major advantage of being a Clinton.

Yeah BC, I know that feeling. The ‘intelligent and sensible’ sid e of you think, look at the issues man, look at the issues, where do they stand on this, that or the other. But the emotional side is tugging away at the same time, saying ‘Yeah, a black man in the White House, forget the damn issues, a black man in the White House’. If Obama wasn’t around, it would more be Wow, a woman!
I guess we can’t help being human can we?

that is so true…it’s good when you have either option on the same side too.

although it seems that things have gotten bogged down recently, history is history and the moment is the moment. in either scenario, i can’t imagine the script being any other way.
