Make-up brushes + Microwave oven = Very Bad Idea

I thought I was being so resourceful.

I didn’t have a vehicle this weekend so I figured that since I was stuck at home I’d use the time to read and clean house.

Having read all day Saturday, I was now ready to clean today.  I did quite a good job I thought and the place was feeling much lighter.

I was almost finished and decided that I’d extend my cleaning efforts to my make-up brushes.   I gathered about seven of them including my favourite big powder brush, washed them in shampoo and hot water as usual.

Normally, I’d just lay them flat to dry in the bathroom.  Every now and then though, I’d get a flash of what seems like brilliance and I had one such this evening.

So I flashed out the excess water and wondered to myself, Why can’t the microwave oven be used in a similar manner to a clothes dryer?  I thought some more about it and didn’t see any harm, so feeling quite pleased with myself for coming up with this stroke of genius, I gathered them all, put them on a sheet of hand-towel, set the oven for 5 minutes and went back to wiping the floor.

I was almost through when I notice the smell of something burning.  Wrinkling my nose I went out to the kitchen, saw that smoke was coming from the microwave oven.

My brushes were ruined.  In thinking about it, I didn’t remember that the handles were made of some type of plastic material.

As I said, I thought I was being resourceful…..

This post kind of reminds me of the time I tried to dry my sneakers in the oven and then feel asleep. When I woke up my sneakers no longer had any soles. Or when my roommate in college tried to dry his boxer brief in the microwave and all that was left was the elastic waist band.

Innovation is definitely to be restricted to certain people. dwl…I’m not laughing, really I’m not…lol.

OK, so Im not having the greatest day, and this post, well it made my day,

Scratchie is right I guess the one’s that invent things are called genius’s for a reason

The rest of us, just get to feel silly every now and then!

I am a bit amazed you tried that. Isn’t that thin metal bits on the brushes? That’s a no no for microwaves because it can cause sparks and start a fire!

Don’t worry. Each of us has our occassional stroke of stupidity.

You know, this is a great idea for a meme! We can all post about something silly we have done! Oh, I have so many ideas!

  • Simplenigma // July 11, 2007 at 6:20 am

LMAO…it’s funny how many people are like “no you shouldn’t have done that”…erm, guys, I think she kinda figured that out already. LOL.

Everytime I’m resourceful, I end up creating more work for myself. Everytime. But dem say “necessity is the mother of invention” so maybe you should make a thing that dries brushes quick…

Oh wait, I think most people just use a blowdryer. LMAO. Hush…. :)

  • Dr. D. // July 12, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Boy Gela, in this heat I’m sure 15-20 minutes at room temperature would have dried them. Anyhow, I guess you now need to go shopping for make up brushes.

This post reminds me of the time my father decided to try the micro to boil an egg in the damn shell…..needless to say there was a rather messy micro after the expolsion occurred!

  • Gela // July 14, 2007 at 10:18 pm

Oh Simple don’t put ideas in my head, I’m already thinking the blowdryer sounds like a good idea :)

Um, Doc, I’ve er tried the boil egg in microwave idea already. And um, yes had the explosion part too. Sigh. Maybe I should just use the microwave in the way it’s meant to be used.

LOL, oh Gela, which of us has never done something silly like that? I once had a jar candle that had burned down too far to be able to light the wick so I had the bright idea of heating the jar on the stove. Things were fine until I forgot about it and the wax burst into flames.

  • Stunner // July 16, 2007 at 10:22 pm

LOL! This time being “resourceful” is definitely going to take a bite out of your resources.

  • revolution island // July 17, 2007 at 2:11 pm

Aw shucks. Well, I guess now you know.

  • Cool Destiny // July 17, 2007 at 2:14 pm

Girl, yu let mi down. Caan believe yu do dat! Even I know better. Hush … but look at the bright side … now you can get some brand spanking new brushes!!!

  • goodersgirl // July 19, 2007 at 11:22 pm

Yuh nuh real! LOL Loosing you brushes is always hard but finding new ones is harder.

Bobby Brown has the best high steet brushes and they ain’t cheap!!!

But MAC are okay and reasonably priced.

  • Gela // July 23, 2007 at 9:33 pm

hehe, don’t know how I come up with these ideas. Just goes to show nuff schooling and education doesn’t mean there’s too much common sense :)

  • jaybee // July 28, 2007 at 10:12 am

to city girl: i once put my brushes in the dryer on the heat setting rather than air–which caused the glue to melt under the ferrules, and the metal separated from the handles.

to the rest: if you want to do an egg in the micro, you have to poke holes in BOTH ENDS of the shell. that helps to release the pressure building inside of the egg as the liquids heat up. no pressure=no explosion… :)
