Why is it that our beloved comedic actor Oliver Samuels has no ‘respect’?
I’m reading the Sunday Gleaner where he wrote a tribute titled ‘Mi fren Charlie’ to dearly departed Charles Hyatt and just cracking up with laughter even while feeling a little sad at the passing of another local cultural icon.
In his own inimitable style Oliver urged Mass Charles to hail up the otherJamaican theatre luminaries who have departed, such as Miss Lou, Mass Ran among other and then closed with, ”Tek care me eediat fren.”
Nice tribute.
Safe travel Charlie, go entertain the angels by regaling them with stories of when ‘yu was a bwoy’.

Jamaican friend told me about his death, I was shocked…I don’t remember seeing it in our newspapers. And I saw a small note about Neville Willoughby in our newspapers.
We Caribbean folks need to honour our creative people more.

Gela, maybe he was bein’ inadvertently insensitive rather than outright disrespectful — it’s kinda hard to tell. Am somewhat astonished at de ‘eediat friend’ part, tho, that really sound kinda harsh.

Not sure how to take that one. Seems to me it’s in the tone of a friend meeting another and having a chat. We call each other all sorts of names and in truth mean something totally different from what we say. Guess I wouldn’t make anything of it.

Oh it was Oliver just being his jovial, comedic Oliver self. I think it’s supposed to be a representation of a conversation he’d have with Ole Charlie if he was still around. When you read the tribute in it’s entirety it’s hilarious actually. I know no disrespect was meant.

I like it. That is the kind of eulogy that I would want - drunken and irreverent. No mamby-pamby, sappy stuff, but friends relating to me on my passing, as they would if I were there.
My friends, Sonny and my significant other often speak to each other in opposites, callin’ each other ‘foolie’, ‘doofus’ and ‘retard’ as a sign of affection. Weird, but I would appeciate nothing less.
RIP Mr. Hyatt.

RIP Charlie. I wrote an article about it some time ago.

Charlie is indeed a cultural icon of Jamaica. That’s Oliver Samuels for you, and Charlie probably wouldn’t have want it no other way.

It really means no harm, but it does sound a bit outta place.
But true what Scratchie says, if you ever hear some o de names we called each odda in school…and they were all supposed to be in good fun!

I’m with MightyAfrodite on this one…Sounds like they were friends, and this was the type of tribute he knew Mr. Hyatt would want.
I would appreciate the same loving, irreverent eulogy. Good ol’ joshing…
I feel like most of the things I knew from my childhood are slowly passing away (no pun intended).
