Not ‘Maam’!

October 12, 2006 · 20 Comments

Now this is something that I don’t appreciate.

How can anyone look on me, a fashionable, very youthful and hot looking 30-plus and call me ‘MAAM’ ? What’s with that? You go to the bank or wherever and the person dealing with you say something like “How may I help you Maam?” Those wretched store people in the States are famous for that. WTH??

I’m very sure that I still look like a ‘Miss’.

It had taken me a little while to get accustomed to someone calling me Miss. Back in my early 20s when I first heard Miss I was taken aback. Then I got to like it. Afterall it sounded respectable, you know like I’m not in the least giddyheaded.

But MAAM! I will never get use to that!

I demand to be referred to as a Miss! I’ll consider a change to Maam when I’m in my 60s.

Some antiquated customer service trainin’ still teachin’ reps 2 address customers as ‘maam’ even rather than by name. In de 90s at Air Canada they trained int’l reps that every French-Canadian female (even grey-haired) was Mademoiselle, call dem ‘Madame’ & it was your arse if they complained.

    Never!!!!!

I ain’t NEVER want to be called Maam.

My mother calls me Gyal. “Gyal, you not coming to have dinnah? Gyal, sun hot in town. Gyal, me weary…” That I don’t mind, it gave me my blog name.

    Imagine, Guyana-Maam.

    Maam In The City.

    Kingston Maam.

    No sah.

    You changed your blog name.

So it would be posted by Maam’s Words now.

You looked like a Miss the last time I met you. Think nothing of it.

  • Lex // October 13, 2006 at 7:13 pm

    Well, Miss. I concur. I don’t like ma’am either.

Most of the children in my life call me Miss Lexi, but by 16 or so, I make them cut that out too. Makes me feel old.

In the States we rarely address a woman directly as Miss. It’s less of a consideration for age or marital status for us.

Atleast they’re trying to be polite, most of the time I get “what da ya want?”

lol. Guyana, listen man, yu almost cause me to choke on me food today. I found your comments so funny. Hehe.

  • cooldestiny // October 14, 2006 at 6:55 am

Hush.. Get used to it too. I actually call people ma’am. I think Miss sounds too country to say “Yes miss”, Yes Ma’am sounds much better. Don’t matter to me. I’m as young as I feel. No Miss or Ma’am or Mrs. gonna make me feel old!!

And Gela, I wish blogger could store my info too so I wouldn’t have to type it every single time. Good thing I do 120 wpm.

Annoying isn’t it CD? I know. That’s one reason I like the WordPress bloggers, your info is saved for you and no darn comment verification. Gosh I hate that! I know that it’s supposed to help with spammers though.

  • Teenage Perfectionist // October 14, 2006 at 12:03 pm

I dont understand how u people get so many comments and i dont! i am so taking down my blog cause its not like anybody reads it anyway.

  • Gela's Words // October 14, 2006 at 12:43 pm

Hey Teenage, will come and check out how school is in a few. I do notice though that you’d pop by quite a few blogs just to say that it’s a nice blog and urge them to visit you. However, I don’t get the impression that you read the blogger cuz I don’t see you commenting on the post topic. Maybe if it’s seen that you’re genuinely interested, then they’d reciprocate more. Just a tip.
But I’ll pass by later, I do occassionally.

You look like a Miss to me…

  • Mighty Afroditee // October 15, 2006 at 6:55 pm

Irony: I hate to be addressed as Ma’am, yet I am drumming this particular courtesy into my son’s head: Ma’am and Sir. Still a work in progress. I feel your pain…
